Earlier this month an elderly woman was attacked by two Rottweilers in Pearland, Texas. A neighbor spotted her with the two dogs on top of her. A neighbor was able to chase the dogs away by waiving a stick and yelling. The dogs ran away to a yard nearby. The elderly woman was admitted to a hospital with serious injuries.
The City of Houston Municipal Code contains ordinances regarding animal ownership in Houston. Chapter 6 of the Code of Ordinances contains seven articles that address different aspects of ownership such as animals at large, care of animals, livestock, disease control and enforcement. Several of the chapters address dog owner responsibilities.
Coastal Health and Wellness Center in Texas City and in Galveston violated 11 different health codes by staff not sterilizing or cleaning instruments used during dental procedures. Patients may have been exposed to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. As many as 9,500 different patients are being tested who might have been exposed to infectious diseases.
April 8-14 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimates that 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States. The Insurance Information Institute estimates that one third of all compensation paid for homeowners liability claims were dog-related injuries in 2017. Approximately $700 million was paid for dog-related injuries by insurance companies for homeowners liability claims relating to injuries caused by dogs.
